Sabrina Lamb Launches petition against “All My Babies’ Mamas” show on Oxygen featuring rapper Shawty Lo.
We have been messaged countless times by our readers to address this show but since we couldn’t find the right words to properly articulate how we really felt about this show we left it all together and held our peace. However, we endorse the statements made by this brilliant lady since she puts everything about this subject into perspective and basically captures how we feel about the show.
While some who have said the show is no different than Sister Wives, and black people in general who have an issue with it need to get over it, we have to be cognizant about the fact that shows such as this go a long way in reinforcing stereotypes and perceptions about an entire group which is not equally and positively represented in the media to begin with. Hence there is not a enough counter perspective to offer an objective view of black parent hood and more. Bygone are the days of the Cosby Show, which single handedly uplifted and changed perceptions about the black experience and family not only in the US but globally.
Given that most networks like VH1 and Bravo which run these shows enjoy a large viewership from the black/African American demographic it is important that people know they have the power to also reject such shows. According to Nielsen Media. ” African-Americans are the largest minority segment of the U.S. television household population, comprising approximately 13 percent of the 109.6 million TV households. African-Americans generally watch more television than other segments of the population..”
We agree with Kathleen Parker’s recently published piece in the Washington Post about the Honey Boo Boo show and otherslike it; that “If we don’t revel in the hilarity of poor, uneducated people, neither do we protest their exploitation. Our silence conveys approval while ratings disprove objection. Culturally, we are all complicit in the decline of community values.”
Sabrina Lamb recently started a petition to get the program off the air, stating:
“A friend of mine emailed the pilot to me, which has since been taken offline. Moment after moment I just saw child exploitation. I mentor a lot of children and I see the impact of these images, and I have to put them back on the right path. This is a marketing campaign specifically geared toward impacting impressionable young people,” she said. “To me, ‘baby’s mama’ is a slur. It’s denying the humanity of a child’s existence. Every child deserves to come into the world loved by two parents, safe and wanted. In the clip I saw, Lo couldn’t even remember the names of all of his 11 children. This is not funny to me. What’s funny about this? I can’t go after all of the shows. Although the 14,000 people that I represent now want me to.”
The petition now has over 30,000 signees.
She added that if the show goes through, the message the show is sending would ultimately be detrimental, pushing the idea of unprotected sex and demeaning women.”
